A WORD ABOUT THE SITES LISTED HERE
There are countless sites on the World Wide Web relevant to the study of religion (try "Googling" "religion"!). We have provided links to some of the more interesting and informative ones, but they are by no means uniform in their style, content, or purpose.
Some links below lead to "content sites" while others lead to "super sites." A content site is one that provides real content, actual information about religion. A super site provides no actual information about religion. Instead, it provides lists of links to other sites relevant to the study of religion. You are currently viewing a "super site." Some sites are hybrids, providing both content about religion as well as links to other sites.
Note that some of these web sites can be thought of as "primary sources" in the study of religion while others are "secondary sources." A primary source web site is one in which the creation of the site itself is a "religious" act. This is a site that is intended by the author to express, support, and promote "the faith" (whatever that faith is). It provides the reader with an "insider's" way of presenting the religion in question. Secondary source sites, on the other hand, are created by scholars to advance the academic study of religion. These sites present religion from the "outsider's" perspective. They aspire to "objectivity" and have no interest in promoting the religion(s) under discussion. No attempt is made here to distinguish between these primary and secondary source sites, and some sites would be difficult to classify. However, visitors to the sites should be conscious of this distinction and be aware of who sponsors any particular site and what their purpose is.
