Minors

The college offers several minors that complement a major in psychology.
Click on the selections below for a description of each concentration.

Gerontology

Goals: Increase understanding of the multifaceted nature of the aging process; prepare students for careers in settings where older persons are served, such as health and social service; deepen sensitivity to aging in oneself and one's family; provide a strong background for entrance into graduate school. The gerontology concentration consists of 18 credit hours and may be combined with any major.

Courses required for the gerontology concentration are:

Psy 321 - Developmental II: Middle Age & Aging
Psy 324 - Issues in Aging or Psy 340 - Aging and Community Service
Res/Soc 349 - Meaning of Death

To insure wider exposure and increase the scope of understanding, the nine remaining credit hours are to be chosen from the following, with one course to be elected from each of the three areas:

Area I: Bio 235 - Human Anatomy and Physiology or Bio 109 - Human Biology
Area II: Soc 314 - Marriage & Families or Soc 413 - Sociology of Social Movements
Area III: Phl 231 - Health Ethics and Medicine or Res 233 - Making Moral Decisions or Res 334 - Biomedical Ethics

 

Women's Studies

Excellent for students interested in pursuing a career involving research or therapy involving women and women's issues.
