NSG 201 Introduction to Transcultural Healthcare (3 credits)

Provides an overview of transcultural healthcare. Explores the importance of transcultural healthcare in contemporary society and identifies the key components of cultural competence.

NSG 301 Foundations for Transcultural Nursing (3 credits)

Students begin to explore and develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills for providing culturally congruent nursing care with individuals across the life span. This course provides foundations of nursing practice, utilizing professional standards of care.

NSG 301L Foundations for Transcultural Nursing (1 credit)

The foundational skills for providing culturally congruent nursing care with individuals across the life span will be emphasized.

NSG 304 Care of Adults/Older Adults I (3 credits)

This course addresses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide culturally congruent nursing care to adults and older adults with acute and chronic health problems.

NSG 304L Care of Adults/Older Adults I (2 credits)

The course will allow the student the opportunities to learn and practice the skills necessary for providing culturally congruent nursing care to adults and older adults with acute and chronic health problems.

NSG 329 Health Assessment in a Multicultural Society (2 credits)

This course explores the physiological, psychological, social, cultural, developmental, and spiritual dimensions of assessing adults, older adults, and children within a multicultural society.

NSG 329L Health Assessment in a Multicultural Society (1 credit)

The skills necessary for obtaining a health history and conducting a physical assessment of the major body systems, relevant to nursing, will be emphasized.

NSG 336 Health in a Changing Society (3 credits)

This course offers the student the opportunity to critically examine the search for health in contemporary society. Demographic, sociological, cross-cultural, economic, and epidemiological variables affecting health-seeking behavior and health care delivery will be considered.

NSG 337 - Maternity and Women's Health Care (2 credits)

This course addresses the nursing care of women from menarche to menopause with a primary focus on childbearing. Basic concepts of normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum will be addressed.

NSG 337L - Maternity and Women's Health Care Lab (1 credit)

The application of a transcultural nursing process in family-centered childbirth, women's health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention will be applied.

NSG 341 - Care of Infants, Children and Adolescent (3 credits)

The nursing care for clients/patients from birth through adolescents who are well, acutely ill, chronically ill, and disabled are explored in this course. The main perspective is that of children within the context of families. In addition, a transcultural perspective is adopted where various ethnic groups are examined in terms of their health and parenting practices. Nursing measures to insure health promotion, disease prevention, and health restoration are all emphasized.

NSG 341L - Care of Infants, Children and Adolescent Lab (2 credits)
Addresses nursing care for clients/patients from birth through adolescence who are well, acutely ill, chronically ill, and disabled in a clinical setting.

NSG 404 Care of Adults and Older Adults II (3 credits)

The purpose of this course is for students to provide culturally congruent nursing care to adults and older adults with complex health care needs. Provision of this course will occur within the contexts of interdisciplinary teams, case management, quality assurance, and advocacy.

NSG 404L Care of Adults and Older Adults II (2 credits)

The course will allow students opportunities to learn and practice the skills necessary for providing culturally congruent nursing care to adults and older adults with complex health care needs.

NSG 406 Mental Health Nursing (3 credits)

Provision of culturally congruent mental health care to individuals/families/groups is the emphasis of this course. Students will analyze the variability in etiology, expression of symptoms, interpretations, explanations, and treatments associated with mental health and mental illness.

NSG 406L Mental Health Nursing Lab (2 credits)

Provision of culturally congruent mental health care to individuals/families/groups is the focus of this clinical course. Students will analyze the etiology, expression of symptoms, interpretations, explanations, and treatments associated with mental illness.

NSG 425 Community Nursing Theory (3 credits)

This is a required theory course of community health nursing. Providing culturally congruent care to aggregates, groups, and communities is the focus of study with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. Students identify the role of the professional nurse in promoting, maintaining, and restoring health. Care of families and groups in community settings is explored.

NSG 427L Community Home Care (2 credits)

This is the clinical practicum for community health nursing. Providing culturally congruent care for individuals and families in home health care are the focus of the study. Students will examine and practice the role of the professional nurse in a home health care program.

NSG 433 Leadership and Management in Health Care Organizations (3 credits)

Students critically examine theories, processes, and practices for effective leadership and management in complex organizations and in culturally diverse workplaces. The perspective taken in this course is that (a) making professional contributions to patient care, work group life, organizations, and health policy requires openness to and development of one's leadership capacities, and (b) all nurses are involved with managing aspects of health care delivery.

NSG 435 Senior Clinical Experience (3 credits)

The purpose of this course is to immerse the student in the complex integration of nursing knowledge and practice in professional systems and settings. Oriented towards helping students formulate a career trajectory, in this final clinical experience students will participate in identifying the practice setting and the specific learning activities that are relevant to their individual interests. The overall intent is to provide a concentrated experience that fosters growth in self-confidence and cultural competence for interacting and responding with others in diverse health care institutions and practice situations.

NSG 476 Health, Nursing, and Society: A Multidisciplinary Perspective (3 credits)

In seminar format, senior nursing majors explore the interconnections among health, nursing and society from the perspectives of multiple disciplines, with special emphasis on the core perspectives areas (fine arts, natural and social sciences, literature, philosophy, religious studies, history, and mathematics). Transcultural and transnational perspectives on contemporary health issues are explored. This course emphasizes the community as a teaching-learning resource. Students will have the opportunity to improve the health and well being of others through service learning. The course provides a capstone experience that promotes the achievement of outcomes stated in the Nazareth College Mission: 1) Commitment to a life informed by intellectual, ethical, and aesthetic values; 2) Development of skills necessary for the pursuit of a meaningful vocation; and 3) Dedication to the ideal of community service (Nazareth College Undergraduate Catalog, page 5).
