About the Department
Established in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Nazareth College is an independent, co-educational comprehensive college in the liberal arts tradition which offers both undergraduate and graduate programs of study. The college has a strong tradition, which dates to the days of its founding, of preparing women and men for careers in service professions including nursing and health care. In response to the nation's needs during World War II, Nazareth established a baccalaureate nursing program in 1942, which operated until the mid-1960's.
Nazareth College has offered an undergraduate program leading to a baccalaureate degree for registered nurses since 1977. The master's degree program to prepare Gerontological Nurse Practitioners was introduced in 1995 and is registered by the New York State Education Department. The 4-year licensure-qualifying program was re-established in 2000. All programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at Nazareth offer the benefit of small classes and the opportunity for close communication and interaction with faculty and advisors. Emphasis is placed on helping you tailor the instructional program to your professional interests and career goals, and on providing an atmosphere that is both academically challenging and personally supportive.
