Music Major Receives Shiner Jazz Award
Nazareth College graduate Jeffrey Hoffman, who earned his bachelor's in music education this May, recently received the 2005 Raymond Shiner Jazz Award. It is a cash scholarship to help with the cost of private music study. Hoffman was chosen because of his talent and motivation
in the area of jazz. Hoffman, of Medina, will use the scholarship to continue his trumpet and piano studies with Paul Smoker at Nazareth. Hoffman says, "Paul has been very influential on my playing and in helping me gain a foundation to teach jazz myself."
While at Nazareth, Hoffman performed with the college's Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Nazareth Concert Band, and Chamber Brass. He also studied trumpet under Steven Marx at Nazareth, and played in a six-piece jazz combo outside of school with Nazareth alumni and students. He's performed with the East Rochester "Sing Out" pit band, Medina Alumni Big Band, Lake Plains Big Band, and as the pit director of the front ensemble with the Medina High School Marching Band.
The award was established in 2000 in memory of world-class jazz musician Raymond Shiner, a leading woodwind specialist in New York City for 20 years. A 1946 graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Shiner played shows on Broadway (including West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof) and was an original member of the Sauter-Finegan Jazz Orchestra. He played many recording sessions and live radio broadcasts, performing live with legends including Miles Davis, Stan Getz, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Quincy Jones. His daughter, Kristen Shiner-McGuire, director of Percussion Studies at Nazareth, created the award in honor of her father.

MENC
The mission of MENC: The National Association for Music Education is to advance music education by encouraging the study and making of music by all. Here at Nazareth College, we pride ourselves on having a very active and involved Chapter of MENC. This year, as in the past few years, we have had a surge in enrollment of new members and students eager and willing to learn more about the field of music education. Some activities that we have done include: an annual car wash, student recitals at the Motherhouse and a softball game against the Music Therapy Club. Our big event of the year remains the Spring Conference. This year it is in Providence, but next year, we are looking forward to the Conference being in Minnepolis, Minnesota.

Music Therapy Club
The Music Therapy Club is an active part of the Nazareth College community. The club provides numerous opportunities for all majors. It offers insight as to what music therapy is, ways to be involved with music in the community, and a whole lot of fun! The club gives students the opportunity to pursue their interests in music therapy outside the classroom. With meetings every two or three weeks, club members are able to stay on top of what is going on in the music therapy world on a student and professional level.
Music therapy club provides information about upcoming regional and national conferences and offers an opportunity to attend these conferences. Some exciting events put on by the music therapy club are the annual "Night of Jazz", which is a semi-formal event with live music, and an annual mini-conference where professional music therapists come to present on a wide variety of topics pertaining to music therapy. The Music Therapy Club also joins with MENC for various events throughout the year.
