Renaissance Dance with Dr. Malkiewicz

On September 15-17, 2009, Dr. Michael Malkiewicz (b. 1967) visited the Nazareth College Music department. A specialist in Renaissance dance, Dr. Malkiewicz offered a special dance class for students on Tuesday evening, and talked with students about early music, Baroque violin, and dance topics throughout his visit. Dr. Malkiewicz was born in Salzburg and studied violin at the 'Mozarteum' University of Music, performing from 1986 to 1992 the ensemble 'La Follia Salzburg' and participating in a historical dance group. He subsequently studied musicology, theology and Slavic languages at the University of Salzburg and from 1996 to 1997 held a fellowship at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Rome. In 2001 he received a PhD with his doctoral thesis on the music and dance of 16th century court dance in Italy. From 1996 to 2002, he was a research assistant at the 'Freie Universität Berlin', focusing on castrati (publications, concerts, exhibition, TV). From 2002 to 2004, he was a research assistant at the University of Salzburg where his work concerned the music of the ballet en action. Dr. Malkiewicz was a research assistant at the Volkswagen-Foundation from 2004 to 2008, where he studied the relationship between music and dance in ballet from the 16th century to the 20th century. He enjoyed his brief visit to Nazareth and his chance to work with music students in the department. He has offered to team-teach an upper level course in the “Music & Culture of Salzburg & Vienna” (with Dr. Marjorie Roth) for Nazareth College music majors in the summer of 2010.
2008 Nazareth College Piano Scholarship Recital
This year we have invited guest pianist Lok Ng to perform music of Beethoven, Busoni, Chopinand Liszt. The scholarship is established to promote keyboard study at Nazareth College.
Pianist Lok Ng was born in Beijing, China and began her piano studies at age 3. She was trained by her mother who had also pursued a career as a concert pianist. Her mother's musical dreams were cut short by China's Cultural Revolution, and Lok was trained to follow in her mother's footsteps and pursue the success that she could not. At age 11, Lok began private studies with Zhau Ping-Guo at the Central Conservatory of Beijing, the most prestigious music school in China. Following the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and the chaos in Beijing that ensued, Lok relocated to Hong Kong and continued her piano studies with Gabriel Kwok at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. In 1992, Lok immigrated to the United States where she completed her post secondary education. She earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. During this time, Lok won first place in the MTNA Competition in Nevada. She repeatedly won the school's concerto competition, performing her winning selections with the University of Nevada at Las Vegas orchestra. In 2000, Lok performed a solo piano recital at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas, where she performed on one of Liberace's pianos.
After completing her studies at University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Lok enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of North Texas, where she studied piano with Joseph Banowetz. Her dissertation focused on the amalgamation of Chinese and Western elements in contemporary Chinese piano music. Upon completion of her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University North Texas, she moved to New York City where she enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music under Zenon Fishbein, and earned a Professional Studies Certificate in piano performance.
In 2007, Lok was the second prize winner in the Liszt-Garrison International Piano Competition in Baltimore, presented by the American Liszt Society. Lok has participated in master classes with Vladamir Feltsman, Earl Wild, Nelita True, Vladimir Shakin, Janice Weber, Peter Nagy, Jerome Rose, and Douglas Humpherys. Lok is currently an adjunct lecturer in piano at both Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs and the College of St. Rose in Albany.
