Nazareth's Kodaly Summer Institute
This summer the Nazareth College offered a unique program for local music educators to learn the Kodaly approach for teaching music to children. The Kodaly Summer Institute was a 10-day session at Nazareth which provided teachers the necessary tools to help their students become competent in music literacy. The 22 participants engaged in singing, instrument playing, improvisation, composing and arranging. The Kodaly approach is a dynamic, exciting way of teaching and learning based on the developmental readiness of the child. Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967) was a prominent Hungarian composer and musician who was determined to reform the teaching of music and to make it an integral part of the education of every child.
