Biography:
A native
of Vancouver Canada, Dr. Carl Wiens is a graduate of the University
of Michigan where he worked with Professors Andrew Mead, Kevin
Korsyn, Glenn Watkins, and William Albright. He has served on
a number of faculties, including Douglas College, Okanagan University
College, the University of Cincinnati and the University of
Massachusetts - Amherst.
Dr. Wiens's research centers on the search for different ways to listen to and understand music, as listeners, performers, and composers. Dr. Wiens's outlook is primarily interdisciplinary, drawing upon a number of different fields - including literary criticism, philosophy, art history, historical studies, and literature - and fusing them with the more traditional means of music analysis and criticism. His work has primarily focused on Igor Stravinsky's music, but also includes a number of other composers.
Dr. Wiens has presented papers at a number of local, national, and international conferences. He has read papers at the Society for Music Theory, the New England Conference of Music Theorists, and the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic in March. For Music Theory Midwest, Dr. Wiens organized and chaired a special session entitled Discourse - Meaning - Genre: Explorations in Music Analysis.
Dr. Wiens is also a composer, having written works for a variety of ensembles. During his tenure at the University of Michigan, he organized a series of concerts - An Evening of Canadian Music - presenting the music of Canadian composers. While at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Wiens led the Graduate New Music Ensemble. He is an Associate Editor for the music theory journal, In Theory Only
