Biography:
Beverly
Smoker is Professor of Music and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies
at Nazareth College. Her numerous appearances as soloist and
collaborative musician include performances on the Knitting
Factory Composer Series, NYC, and recordings for ABC Radio in
Brisbane, Australia, and Centaur Records. She was a recipient
of a Gramma Fisher Fellowship at the American Institute of Musical
Studies in Graz, Austria, and for ten years, a recipient of
solo touring grants from the Iowa Arts Council and National
Endowment for the Arts. Ms. Smoker presents a wide range of
repertoire including recitals and workshops devoted to twentieth-century
music, and has premiered several works written for her. She
also performs regularly with the Dechario/Smoker Piano Duo.
Dr. Smoker is currently offering programs featuring piano preludes: Changing Styles and Roles: Keyboard Preludes from the Fifteenth Century to the Present, and Twentieth Century Preludes: Music of Alexander Scriabin, Ruth Crawford, Richard Danielpour, Maurice Ohana and Oliver Messaien. A long-term active MTNA member, Dr. Smoker is currently NYSMTA New Music Review Chair, Vice President for Professional Activities, and District 12 president.
