Biography:
John Hain holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. He also holds a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University. His primary teachers include John Beck, Michael Burritt, Bill Cahn, James Ross, Rubin Alvarez, and Paul Wertico. In addition, he has particpated master classes with Leigh Howard Stevens, Bob Becker, NEXUS, and Jim Cambell among others.
Currently, Dr. Hain is on faculty at Nazareth College and Roberts Wesleyan College. He is also an active scholar, having published articles in Percussive Notes. Prior to these appointments he taught high school instrumental music in public schools in and around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, served as an adjudicator for the Wisconsin School Music Association, and a worked as a clinician for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestras.
Dr. Hain has performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Ossia new music ensemble, the Oblivion Ensemble and the Eastman Musica Nova ensemble. He was also the section leader for the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s 50th anniversary tour which culminated in a showcase performance at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Dr. Hain has worked with such notable composers as John Adams, George Crumb, David Lang, Charles Wuorinen, John Zorn, and Steve Reich.
