Degree Programs: Music Therapy

Music Therapy majors complete eight semesters of study in a curriculum of education and clinical training, followed by a 6 month internship. Completion of the curriculum and clinical training approved by the American Music Therapy Association results in eligibility to sit for the national certification examination in music therapy administered by the Certification Board of Music Therapists (CBMT). Course studies for the Music Therapy major include:


  • Study the impact of melody, harmony and rhythm on the physiological and psychological functioning of children and adults.
  • Participate in hands-on clinical training, both in the community and in Nazareth's on-campus clinic, working with clients with physical,communication, emotional and cognitive disabilities.
  • Learn to improvise and compose music for therapy, and master
    accompaniment skills in piano and guitar.
  • Gain insight and skills in clinical practice, advocacy and
    accountability within educational and health care settings.
  • Develop research and study skills necessary for the practice of music therapy as well as the pursuit of advanced degrees.
  • Achieve a high level of technical and musical artistry on a primary instrument through weekly one-hour lessons and numerous performance oppportunities.

Grand Opening of On-site Clinic

On October 30, 2008 the Music Therapy program is celebrating the opening of the on-campus Music Therapy Clinic, and holding an afternoon and evening of events with fundraising for the music therapy students to attend upcoming conferences.
