Nazareth College Chamber Orchestra
The Nazareth College Chamber Orchestra (NCCO) meets two times a week, with a focus on the preparation of literature for small orchestra. This season the Chamber Orchestra will perform music of Bach, Handel, Stamitz, Albinoni, Mendelssohn, Gershwin and Bloch. Department Chair James Douthit will be featured with the NCCO in the Mozart piano concerto No. 13 in C major, K. 415.
The group provides the opportunity for Nazareth orchestral conducting students to lead the ensemble. The NCCO is under the direction of Nancy Strelau.
Through the variety of small ensembles offered, trios and quartets are formed at the beginning of each semester. Literature is determined by each chamber music coach with input from ensemble member. Chamber groups perform each semester in string recital, college ensemble performances, and at various venues throughout the community.
Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra
The Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra (NCSO) under the direction of Nancy Strelau, performs a wide variety of traditional and contemporary orchestral literature. The orchestra collaborates with the Nazareth College Choirs and features faculty and student soloists each year. NCSO meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and is open to all Nazareth College students and community members. The orchestra presents three classical concerts and their annual Pops concert each semester.
The orchestra performed in Nassau, Bahamas at the invitation of the government to accompany the inaugural concert of the National Choir of the Bahamas in February, 2006, and continues that relationship.
The 2008-2009 seasons begins with an evocative program of musical imagery featuring music of Holst, Smetana, Hovhaness and Vaughan Williams, joined by the Nazareth College Chamber Singers and faculty members JJ Hudson, Kimberly Upcraft-Russ and Kristen Shiner McGuire.
In November, Nazareth choral and orchestral ensembles will join forces to perform Schubert’s Magnificat and Mozart’s Regina Coeli. In March the NCSO presents the winners of the annual concerto competition, along with our favorite Russian Romantic composers. The season ends in April with a little jazz, a little pop, and a good dose of humor as the orchestra offers the annual Pops Concert.
