- Blackboard
- What is Blackboard?
- Blackboard is the Course Management System used by Nazareth College available to all students and instructors. All official Nazareth courses are automatically created in Blackboard but the use of the Blackboard site is at the discretion of the instructor.
- How do you access Blackboard?
- Accessing Blackboard is accomplished by visiting http://nazareth.blackboard.com, going to the bottom of the Nazareth College home page and selecting the Blackboard link, or using link in the Quicklinks box on any other Nazareth web page.
- What are the Usernames and Passwords?
- Usernames and passwords are the same as you have been provided for other Nazareth systems. For users new to the system after 1/1/2010 the username will be your official Nazareth email address without @naz.edu and your password will be the first three letters of your last name followed by the last four digits of your social security number. If you have difficulty opening your Blackboard account, contact the Service Desk at 389-2111.
- What are the TOP TEN REASONS to use Blackboard?
- All of your course materials can be available to members of your course 24/7 (no excuse for misplacing a book or paper)
- All of your text and media can be stored and/or linked in one location (all of your videos and ppts at a single click)
- It is an ideal way to deal with missed classes by students and instructors (out with the flu?)
- Students can have instant access to their grades and view their progress in your course at any time (no more surprises and frantic emails late at night)
- Email distribution lists of all students is built into your course for ease of emailing (tremendous time saver in many ways)
- Multiple modes of communication can reduce the traffic in your email (discussion boards, chats, electronic submissions)
- Grade Center is extremely versatile and converts easily to Excel (or into other formats as well)
- Go Green: assignments can be submitted, graded, review electronically at any time, save paper, ink, and anxiety. You could actually eliminate ALL paper!
- Conversion of a course in Blackboard to a hybrid or online format is easy and painless (there are instructors doing this very thing right now)
- Tools like the discussion boards, chat rooms, test and survey manager and statistical tracking of student performance can add a new dimension to your courses (class time can be more productive while online time can be used for expanding in other ways never before considered)
- How do I schedule a consultation with an Instructional Technology Specialist who can help me with Blackboard?
- Call the Service Desk at 381-2111 for assistance with questions and problems
- Call Instructional Technology Office at 389-2117 to schedule an appointment for a consultation
- or send an email request to pmonach3@naz.edu

- To deactivate Call Forward:
- Leaving the receiver in the cradle, hit the FORWARD button.
- To forward calls to Voicemail:
- (your phone will not ring and the caller will hear your no-answer greeting immediately), you can Call Forward to 3777.

If you forward your phone to another number at any time, you must remember to
deactivate forwarding when you want to resume the "normal" operation of phone
ringing and automatic forwarding the Voicemail.
- Station Speed Dialing
- The station speed dialing feature lets you assign a single digit code to
replace a long number sequence, for each of the 10 single digit codes

- Optiset E Standard or Optipoint 500 Phones
- Both Optiset E Standard and Optipoint 500 phones have a display and three navigation keys.
The > and < keys will take you forward or backward to the next or previous option.
The check mark key will select the option that is showing in the display.
Please avoid experimenting with options that you are not sure about,
as this may change the proper operation of your phone.
Some convenient options are available to you to select from the display,
and they will change depending on where you are in the calling process.
- For example:
- When you receive or originate a call, your display should automatically show
"START TRANSFER >" (there is no longer a TRANSFER key). To TRANSFER the call,
just hit the check mark key, and type the extension you want to transfer the call to.
- When you call an external number and no one answers (phone still ringing),
you should see SAVE NUMBER? Hit the check mark key and that ONE number will be stored.
When you first pick up your receiver, you will see LAST NUMBER REDIAL?
Hit the check mark key to call whatever number you called last (not necessarily the one stored above).
To call the number you stored above, hit > once, and you should see SAVED NUMBER REDIAL
hit the check mark key to dial the one number you saved above.
- When you call an internal extension you will see CALLBACK?
Do not use this feature when the phone rings and is unanswered,
since the person you are calling will not generally understand handling the call.
If you get a busy signal on an internal extension, you can use
CALLBACK (hit the check mark key) and hang up.
Both phones will ring when the other phone is free.
If your CALLBACK light is lit, and you do not understand why, hit the CALLBACK button followed by the CLEAR button.
- No Disturb
- You probably have a NO DISTURB key (press to toggle ON/OFF).
You can use this if you have people in your office and do not want the phone to ring
it goes directly to voicemail. You can also use it when on vacation so your phone doesn’t ring
the caller gets to voicemail more quickly and will get your alternate (vacation) message
if you have activated that in the voicemail system
- Forward
- To forward calls to another extension, pick up the handset, hit FORWARD,
enter the extension FOLLOWED BY THE # key. To remove the forwarding,
leave the handset down and hit the FORWARD button.
- Speakerphones
- All of these phones are speakerphones, meaning you can hear and speak with the handset in the cradle.
The Optipoint 500 has a SPEAKER button if you start the call with the handset,
you can switch to speaker by hitting the speaker button and replacing the handset.
The Optipoint 500 also has a MUTE button, to close the microphone for people in the room
to have a private conversation. Lastly, the Optipoint 500 operates such that speaking is
allowed even when the other party is talking. The Optiset E has a speaker and microphone,
but not the other features above (a call starting on the handset cannot be switched to speaker, no MUTE,
and there needs to be a pause in speaking for the microphone to work).

- Calls to any numbers or to voicemail can be started with the handset still in the cradle,
by simply starting to dial the number (or hit the phone mail button).
There is no need to pick up the handset first OR hit the extension line key to get dial tone
just start dialing. Once dialing is complete, you can pick up the handset (or leave it down for speakerphone operation).
- Conference Call
- To set up a CONFERENCE CALL, with internal or external parties
- Call the first party and wait for them to connect

- Faculty Voicemail
- Each full-time faculty member has one voicemail box.
- Think about your personal greeting. You have 30 seconds total, so keep it brief. The same greeting plays whether the phone is busy or unanswered.
- Sample: This is Tom. I am either on the phone or out right now. Please leave a message at the tone.
- Once you have though this out, you are ready to proceed.
- Instructions
- Dial 2424 (from on campus)
- Enter your assigned 4 digit extension and hit #
- Enter your password and hit # (initial password is 111111)
- To change your personal voicemail password: Enter option 9, and then option 3
- To enter or change your personal greeting: Enter option 8, and then option 1
- You will hear your current greeting
- Enter option 1 to record your personal greeting. See sample above and remember you have 30 seconds. When you are done speaking press * then #
- Hang up your voicemail box is now set
- When you have messages, you should hear a "broken" or "stutter" dial tone. Some phones are also equiped with a voicemail indicator light. If you have one of these you can then dial in to the voicemail system (extension 2424 or 389-2424 from off campus) and follow the prompts you will hear
- Faculty Voicemail Shared Extention
- Important - understand the concept
- If your phone is unanswered or busy, you have one greeting which the caller hears first,
instructing them to Press 1 for _____, Press 2 for _____, Press 3 for ______,
where the blank is for each faculty name. You must instruct the caller to press 1, 2 or 3 here.
- You ALSO have your own personal voicemail box, with your own very brief greeting (and
its own password), where the caller can leave a message. If there are only 2 faculty, just use 1 and 2. You MUST do all 3 steps below.
- Step 1: Record your shared greeting instructing the caller to press 1. 2. or 3
- Dial 2424 from your own phone on campus
- Hit # then enter your password (initially 111111 [6 one's] unless you have changed it), then # again
- Press 2 to change your password. Follow the voice commands to change the password to something all faculty members will remember
- Press 1 to change your greeting. Follow the voice commands to change
your greeting. This is the shared greeting for all faculty ont he extention,
something like Hi, we are either out or on the phone now, to leave a message
for ______, press 1, for ______ press 2, for _____ press 3
- Remember to instruct your caller to press 1, 2, or 3.
- You have 30 seconds for this greeting
- When done speaking PRESS * then #
- Hang up
- Step 2: Record your personal voicmail box greeting (each faculty member)
- Important to understand:your voicemail box number is NOT just your extension number, it is your extension number plus the number 1, 2, or 3, as you have assigned it in the greeting you did in step 1. So your voicemail box number is 5 digits. When a voicemail prompt says, if calling from your own extension, ignore that, because it will not know your 5 digit voicemail box number, you must always enter your 5 digit voicemail box number.
- Dial 2424 from on campus
- Enteryour 5 digit (such as 33551, 33552 or 33553) personal voicemail box number, then enter your password (initially 111111 [6 one's], unless you have changed it), then # again
- Press 9 then 3 to change your personal and confidential password. Follow the voice commands to change your personal password
- Press 8 then 1 to change your personal greeting. Follow the voice commands to change your greeting
- This is your personal confirmation that the caller has reached the correct voicemail box just say something like "Leave a message for ______." You have just 6 seconds for this greeting
- When done speaking Press * then #
- Hang up
- Step 3: Test (Highly Recommended)
- Simply call your own phone from your own phone through an outside line (9, 389-xxxx). You should hear a greeting that properly instructs the caller to dial 1, 2, or (if needed) 3, and for which student. Press 1, 2, or 3 and check that you get your personal greetings. Leave yourself a message and try retrieving it (see below).
- Step 4: Retrieving Your Voicemail
- There is no indicator light or broken dial tone when you have voicemail waiting. To find out if you have voicemail, you must dial into the voicemail system.
- Dial 2424 from on campus or 389-2424 from off campus
- Enter your 5 digit personal voicemail box number, then # (Remember, ignore the prompt about if you are calling from your own extension...)
- Enter your personal password (see step 2 above) then #
- Press 3 and follow the voice commands to see if you have messages and to listen, skip, delete, etc.
- If you have a phone which allows you to program dialing sequences and have them automatically executed when you hit just one or two keys, this will work well for going through the above process to regularly check and retrieve your voicemail. You may need to place pauses in your dialing sequence at the logical places.
