Portuguese at Nazareth
College is offered as a video-based course that
focuses on mastering the basic structure of the
language to build communication. A variety of
teaching strategies and tools (such as easy-to-read
story books, poetry, magazines, newspapers and songs)
are used to foster the use of the language and to
enhance the course. Audio tapes are also used to
reinforce the drills. Students have access to
Brazilian newspapers through the Internet and enjoy
the fun of using computer resources to learn the
language. The classes provide an overall approach to
the culture of Brazil, emphasizing its roots and
diversities.
Instructor
Prof. Maria Leda Souza-Hogan, a
native of Brazil, shares her vibrant and colorful
culture with her students and encourages them to
share their thoughts in a relaxed setting. Portugese
has been offered at Nazareth College since 1989, in an
environment where the instructor challenges the
students to become proficient in the language, after
mastering a basic structure and vocabulary.
Prof. Souza-Hogan is presently working toward a Ph.D.
in Spanish at the University of Buffalo. She has
taught Spanish and French in public schools since
1982, and Portuguese at Nazareth College since 1989.
