Program Description:
Bachelor of Music in Music Education
Music education majors at Nazareth College earn certification in
Music Education (Pre K - 12 - All Grades). New York State does not
recognize specialty areas in music certification, so music education
students study instrumental, choral, and general music methods.
In addition to the Liberal Arts Core, courses studied for the music
education major follow:
- Music Education Courses: a six-course sequence
from the freshman year through student teaching including field
observation experience
- Methods Courses: study of brass, strings, woodwinds,
percussion, voice, diction, and vocal pedagogy as required according
to each student’s applied major
- Conducting Courses: a three-course sequence
in both choral and instrumental conducting with lab ensemble experience
- Music History and Theory: three upper-division
music history and theory courses including Arranging
- Education Courses: History and Philosophy
of Education, Educational Psychology
- Two semesters of a Foreign Language
- Other Requirements: complete all music education
and education courses with grades of “C” or higher,
complete and pass the New York State Teacher Certification Exams
and Senior Comprehensive Exam, and maintain an overall 2.7 or
higher grade point average.
Audition and Admission Requirements:
Auditions for admission to the Music Department are held from November
to April in the Gerald G. Wilmot Hall of Music. Students do not
have to be accepted to the college first, but must have applied
to the college before auditioning.
- Theory Placement exams are held at 9:00 a.m.
First year examinations normally require one hour; additional
time is scheduled for junior year placement. Junior year placement
is accomplished by examination only.
- Auditions are held between 10:30 a.m. and 2:00
p.m. Time is provided for warm-up and a brief rehearsal.
- A personal interview follows the audition.
- Sight-singing and keyboard placement interviews
are scheduled within the remaining time.
