Program Description:
The Literacy Education Program prepare classroom teachers who are skilled in learning theories and practices that address individual learning needs, and who are able to affirm the value of the broadest range of a diverse classroom population and teach member of the classroom. The program faculty believes that all teachers need to be teachers of literacy and that all students can learn the requisite literacy skills to make them lifelong readers, writers, listeners, speakers, visualizers, and dramatizers.

The program faculty subscribes to the notion that, as a result of completing the program, all teachers will be knowledgeable with regard to strategies and support services to improve literacy instruction for diverse student population in urban, suburban, and rural classrooms.
Initial certification as a Literacy Specialist (grades 5-12)
Professional certification in the area(s) of certification held at the time of entrance to the graduate program.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field. An applicant who does not meet these grade point average expectations must address them in his/her personal statement; please see the Personal Statement section of the admissions application form for further information.
  2. Presentation of official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Copy of teacher certification.
  5. Application and fee.
  6. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
