In
the context of a diverse and continually changing society, the acceleration of
growth in information, technology and learning has meant that there continue to
be evolving bodies of knowledge and increased parameters for skills and understandings
required of teachers and students. The faculty of the graduate education programs
at Nazareth College shares a belief that in a democracy, educators must be aware
of societal needs and must be willing to think and act critically, to envision
issues fully, and to respond to their complexities. Further, in understanding
the interconnectedness of life and learning, the faculty believes that all educators
must be committed to partnerships and collaborations with students, parents, the
community, and colleagues across disciplines. The
faculty who teach in the graduate program acknowledge and appreciate the particular
characteristics of graduate students, and seek to provide learning experiences
that support a sense of integration and agency reflective of and connected to
their life experiences. Faculty members are committed to providing graduate programs
that: · integrate theory and practice, and require students to demonstrate
that they are both thinkers and doers; · develop students who are active
learners who engage in meaningful, field-based courses; · support self-motivated,
independent learners, “generators of knowledge” who are inquiry oriented
and innovative; and · nurture reflective, life-long learners who both
model this disposition for their own students and serve as mentors for them.
