Adolescence
Initial Certification

Program Description:
This program prepares students to effectively teach learners at the adolescence level, following an inclusive education model. This program is designed for students who do not currently hold any teacher certification.
Students who successfully complete this program will receive New York State Initial Teacher Certification in the following two areas:

Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12)
Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence Level (Grades 7-12)
(Note: Adolescence certification is specific to a content area. Options available at Nazareth College are Biology, English, Mathematics, or Social Studies.)

Admission Requirements:

  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field.
    (There are liberal arts prerequisites for the Inclusive Adolescence Education Initial Certification Program, including a major or concentration of at least 30 semester credit hours in the content area of certification – Biology, English, Mathematics, or Social Studies. SEE Graduate Catalog for detailed information.)
  2. Presentation of official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
