Teaching Students with Severe or Multiple Disabilities

Program Description:
This program of study focuses on deepening students’ understandings of teaching students with severe or multiple disabilities. Students select a focus on either “Students with Challenging Behaviors,” or “Students with Functional Skill Instruction Needs.” Both stands include inclusive strength-based perspectives.

Students who successfully complete this program will receive an annotation on their New York State Teacher Certification:

Teaching Students with Severe or Multiple Disabilities

Admission Requirements:

  1. Enrollment in an Inclusive Education Program at Nazareth College.
OR
  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field.
  2. Presentation of official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
  6. Copy of teacher certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities.

Required Course Credits: 6 credit hours

Focus One: Students with Functional Skill Instruction Needs
SMD 640 Seminar in Learning Standards, Alternate Performance Indicators, and Assessments for Students with Significant Disabilities 3 15 hrs.  
SMD 641 Tools and Strategies for Functional Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Significant Disabilities 3 35 hrs.  
Focus Two: Students with Challenging Behaviors
SMD 650 Seminar in Supporting Students with Challenging Behavior in Inclusive Settings 3 15 hrs.  
SMD 651 Strategies for Breaking the Conflict Cycle and Teaching Students with Challenging Behaviors 3 35 hrs.

Students may take these courses as elective credit within the Inclusive Education: Additional Certification, Same Developmental Level Programs and the Inclusive Childhood Education: Professional Certification Program.
