Literacy Programs: Grades 5 Through 12

Program Description:

The Literacy Education Program (Grades 5-12), a second certification program, is based on the premise that all teachers are teachers of literacy and all students can develop the behaviors to be readers, writers, listeners, speakers, visualizers, and dramatizers throughout their lives.

Through coursework, practica experiences, and fieldwork, the faculty guides and supports its students in becoming competent, committed, and caring professionals who have both teh dispositions and abilities to teach diverse populations in urban, suburban, and rural classrooms. The program's students learn to be strategic in applying appropriate and exemplary teaching practices to determine and meet each student's strengths and needs.

Certification:

Students who successfully complete this program will receive:

  • New York State Initial Teacher Certification in Literacy Specialist (Grades 5-12).
  • New York State Professional Teacher Certification in the area of certification held at the time of entrance to the Nazareth graduate program.

Admission Requirements:

  • An earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  • A cumulative grade point index of 3.0.
  • A "B" average in his/her major field
  • To be submitted at the time of application:
    • A completed application form including an extended personal professional statement as directed in application, if GPI does not meet the requirement.
    • Official copies of all transcripts.
    • Copy of statement verifying eligibility for certification.
    • Two letters of recommendation from two individuals who know the candidate as a student or teacher.
