Literacy Programs

The Literacy Education Programs prepare classroom teachers to integrate learning theories, practices, and research in a thoughtful and effective way. Our graduates address all learners' literacy needs and interests in an inclusive and supportive manner.

Community Involvement

Pre-K at College Held at Nazareth College

This annual event encourages urban children and their families to consider college as part of their plans for the future. The successful event on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 included a reading by children's author, Will Hubbell and activities planned by students from the School of Education and the School of Health and Human Services at Nazareth College. Rochester City School District High School students provided vital volunteer support. While children participated in activities, parents enjoyed an interactive presentation from community experts Jim Coffey from MCC and Wegmans Dietician, Trish Kazacos. Wegmans donated apples and snacks to sweeten the day. The Marie Callahan Reading Clinic at Nazareth College gave each participating child a copy of Will Hubbell's book, Apples Here!

Nazareth College and the Literacy Programs are closely involved with the Rochester community in many ways. Here are some examples of how we are making a difference:

 

Book display of featured authors' work

4th Annual Teen Book Festival at Nazareth College held on Saturday, April 4th, 2009.

The 5th Annual Festival will be held on May 15th, 2010. Featured authors will include Laurie Halse Anderson (Speak), Robin Brande (Evolution, Me & Other Freaks of Nature), Ellen Hopkins (Burned), Daniel Kirk (Elf Realm and Library Mouse), Mari Mancusi (Gamer Girl), Lisa McMann (Fade), Alyson Noel (Art Geeks and Prom Queens), and Vivian Vande Velde (All Hallow’s Eve).
