This program of study focuses on Spanish bilingual education. Students who successfully complete this program will extend their New York State Teacher Certification to teach in bilingual settings of their original certification. For example, if a teacher is certified at the childhood level, the bilingual extension will extend their certification to include bilingual childhood level teaching.
- Enrollment in a graduate-level teacher certification program
(Early Childhood Education; Childhood Education; Middle Childhood Education; Adolescence Education; a special subject; Literacy Education; Career and Technical Education; Students with Disabilities in Early Childhood, Childhood, Middle Childhood, or Adolescence; Students who are blind or visually impaired; Students who are deaf or hard of hearing; or Students with speech and language disabilities) with a cumulative index of 3.0. - Fluency in Spanish and English.
OR
- Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field.
- Complete annotation /extension form and pay fee.
- Copy of teacher certification in Early Childhood Education; Childhood Education; Middle Childhood Education; Adolescence Education; a special subject; Literacy Education; Career and Technical Education; Students with Disabilities in Early Childhood, Childhood, Middle Childhood, or Adolescence; Students who are blind or visually impaired; Students who are deaf or hard of hearing; or Students with speech and language disabilities.
- Fluency in Spanish and English.

Qualified candidates can receive $300 per credit hour of tuition support ($900 per class) through the NYS Education Department's Intensive Teacher Institute (ITI) Programs. Nazareth College has also demonstrated a commitment to bilingual education by offering to augment ITI tuition support so that Bilingual Extension students who receive the ITI scholarship need to pay only $100 per credit hour (or a total of $300 per class).
The ITI application process is separate from the Nazareth College acceptance process. In order to apply for the ITI scholarship, visit http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/biling/bilinged/iti.html Download, complete, and mail the Eligibility Requirements and Intensive Teacher Institute Application. Applications can be completed and submitted to ITI prior to acceptance at Nazareth College.
