In the spring of 2005, the Center for Teaching Excellence is piloting a new initiative at Nazareth College -- Senior Read. The purpose of the Senior Read is to present a forum for seniors that promotes discussion about the life and work of their graduation speaker. Discussion groups are formed to read works of the speaker or to review works about them. These discussions are facilitated by a member of the Nazareth faculty.

This year, the commencement speaker is Azar Nafisi, author of the best seller novel Reading Lolita in Tehran. To help seniors get the most out of Professor Nafisi's presentation in May, the Center for Teaching Excellence, with the support of the faculty and a planning committee, is piloting this event so that Seniors will have an opportunity to come together in reading groups of 6-8 with a faculty facilitator(s) to discuss Professor Nafisi's book.

Scheduled dates for the first discussion session are:

  • Tuesday, February 15, 2005 from 4:00-6:30 P.M.
(with ongoing discussions on 8 March and 12 April)
    -OR-
  • Wednesday, February 16, 2005 from 4:00-6:30 P.M.
(with ongoing discussion on 9 March and 13 April)

Copies of the text and a light supper will be provided to those who participate.

Registration: Please complete the registration form to reserve your spot in a scheduled discussion group. The registration deadline for these discussions has been extended to February 10th.

Students may also participate by forming their own discussion group and applying to be sponsored (i.e. free book and food) by the Center. To apply to become an independent discussion group, submit a list of the participants and dates you are planning to meet to Dr. Diane Enerson, Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, by email (denerso9@naz.edu) or by phone (389-2380).
