Music Therapy Program Description and Goals

The Music Therapy specialization in Creative Arts Therapy offers graduate students an opportunity to gain and refine skills in an interdisciplinary, personalized setting.  The on-campus clinic serves children and adults and music therapy is provided as a stand-alone service or in co-treatment with Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Art Therapy.  Further diverse clinical experience is possible because of the over 50 music therapists working in the greater  Rochester area.

Graduate Music Therapy students study core classes with their Art Therapy peers, exploring psychotherapeutic principles and their application to music therapy practice.  Music Therapy coursework calls for in-depth, qualitative examination of clinical practice, as well as a focus on music neuroscience.  Independent study and research/thesis classes allow students to concentrate on a specific area of practice, refining skills and gathering data on efficacy.  Current graduate research includes such varied topics as the personal reflections on music by persons with Williams' syndrome, and the effect of drumming on self-ratings of depression in elderly Spanish-speaking clients.

The Music Therapy specialization program includes tracks for both MT-BCs (48 hours) and Masters-Equivalency students -- those who have an undergraduate degree in music or music education, who wish to pursue their music therapy board-certification and Master's degree (60 hours).

History and Location

Nazareth College's program in Art Therapy, founded by Dr. Ellen G. Horovitz, gained approval by the American Art Therapy Association in 1990. The program grew out of an existing merger with the former Hillside Children's Center program in Creative Arts Therapy (located in Rochester, NY). In 1992, a union between the Creative Arts therapy Program and Nazareth College was created in order to offer students an education which granted a master's degree. At that time, the academic component of the Hillside Children's Center program was moved to the Nazareth College campus and augmented with additional course work in order to enhance the educational possibilities for matriculated, degree-seeking students. Today, the program has blossomed into an interdisciplinary format which dovetails with the School of Health and Human Services. There are over 60 placement opportunities within the art therapy training program. Students are exposed to a variety of placements that range from working with myraid populations. Nazareth's program is heavily embedded in a classical, medical model with a clinical component that hinges on didactic learning.

Although the clinically based model is still applicable to the program, three key elements were paramount in structuring the Nazareth College art therapy program. Embracing the concept of developing an "education for life" was critical in the composition of the program. Moreover, integrating this framework into an ethical viewpoint that would influence students in their vocational life plan was tantamount to preserving a commitment to the third area of concern, community service. As a result, the Graduate Art Therapy Program fabricated a mission statement that incorporates the vision of the old (Hillside) and defines the conception of the future.

The Music Therapy program at Nazareth College is over a quarter-century old, and graduate programming was added in 2006.  Dr. Bryan Hunter, head of the CAT program, has the first license for Creative Arts Therapists issued in the State of New York, and he a current board member and past chair of the New York State Board for Mental Health Practitioners.

Nazareth Music Therapy graduates work throughout the country, but have also established a large, thriving music therapy community in the Rochester area.  Music therapists from other programs who have moved to Rochester have broadened the diversity of clinical practice, providing Nazareth students with rich experience in their education and training.
