Referrals
On Campus Referrals
While most students cope adequately with the many aspects of their lives, some experience distress that becomes unmanageable and interferes with learning. Some signs and symptoms of student distress are:
- Procrastination
- Poorly prepared work
- Falling asleep in class
- Infrequent class attendance
- Personal hygiene changes
- Lack of energy
- Marked changes in mood
- Impaired or garbled speech
- Disjointed thoughts
- Threats to harm oneself or others
- A high level of irritability
If you are concerned about a student, we encourage you to consider the following guidelines:
- Speak with the student in private, specifically stating your reasons for concern.
- Listen carefully, avoiding criticism or sounding judgmental.
- Discuss with the student the possibility of attending counseling. (Sometimes it is helpful to accompany the student to his/her first counseling session.)
- If the student resists referral and you remain concerned about the student, contact the office at 585-389-2887 to discuss your concerns.
- If an emergency exists outside of the regular office hours, call Campus Safety at extension 3333 or 389-2850.
Off Campus Referrals
At times students require off campus mental health care. Counseling Services is available to facilitate and expedite these referrals.
