Purchasing and Installing Virus Software

The most important thing to remember about any anti-virus product is that it must be installed, it must be running, and its virus definitions must be kept current. That means that virus definitions must be updated at least once a week. Most software allows your system to automatically download updates through the Web.

Most anti-virus software products work on a subscription basis. After a certain amount of time (usually a year if you purchased the software, less if a trial version came installed on a new computer you just purchased) that subscription will expire and you will no longer be able to download updates to protect your computer from the latest viruses. Make sure you are aware of when your anti-virus software will expire and consult the literature that came with it, or check the manufacturer's Web site, to find out how to renew your subscription.

Important: Products that include firewalls as part of a package should NOT be installed, as they may prevent your system from accessing the Internet unless properly configured. For this reason, products such Norton Internet Security 2002 and McAfee's Internet Security v4.0 should NOT be used on any system connected to the Nazareth network.

Antivirus software is available at local computer stores or via the Web.
