NAZARETH COLLEGE PREPARATORY DIVISION MUSIC STUDENTS WIN SCHOLARSHIPS
Nine area music students have recently won scholarship awards and
commendations from the Preparatory Division of the Nazareth College
Music Department, as part of its Twelfth Annual Scholarship Auditions,
held January 18, 2004. Each participating student qualified by means
of teacher recommendation, in recognition of superior musicianship
demonstrated throughout the school year. All of the winners were
presented in a public Honors Recital on Sunday March 14, 2004 at
2:00 P.M., in Wilmot Hall at Nazareth College.
Mia Gorczya, a pianist from Pittsford, was awarded Co-First
Place in the Beginner Category, and will receive a tuition
aid scholarship. Mia is the daughter of Maria and John Gorczya,
and is a first-grader at the Thornell Road Elementary School. Her
teacher at Nazareth is Dr. Bonnie Choi.
Sharing the Co-First Place scholarship award is Maddy
Avino, a flute student from Pittsford. Maddy, a fifth-grader
at Park Road Elementary School, is the son of Margarete and Charles
Avino; his teacher at Nazareth is Julie Oris Heikkila.
Isaac Messina, a clarinetist from Pittsford, was awarded
First Place in the Lower Intermediate Category, and
will receive a tuition aid scholarship. Isaac is the son of Barbara
and Mitch Messina, and is a sixth-grader at the Pittsford Middle
School. His teacher at Nazareth is Don DeWitt.
Melissa Garrison, a pianist from Pittsford, was awarded Second
Place in the Lower Intermediate Category, and will receive
a tuition aid scholarship. Melissa is the daughter of Ann and Jeff
Garrison, and is a fifth-grader at the Allendale-Columbia School.
Her teacher at Nazareth is Dr. Bonnie Choi.

David Geary,
a piano student from Brighton, was named First Place winner
in the Upper Intermediate Category, and will receive a tuition
aid scholarship. He is a seventh grader at the Twelve Corners Middle
School in Brighton, and is the son of Marcia and Brian Geary. His
teacher is Dr. Gary Fisher at Nazareth.
Mikey Jarrell, a flute student of Julie Oris Heikkila, won
Second Place in the Upper Intermediate Category.
Mikey is a sixth-grader at Allendale-Columbia School, and is the
son of Lynne and Gregg Jarrell.
Molly Jackson,
a flute student of Julie Oris Heikkila at Nazareth, won First
Place award in the Advanced Category, and will receive
a tuition aid scholarship. He is a tenth-grader at Pittsford Sutherland
High School, and is the son of of Sarah Jackson of Batavia.
Claire Burtner, piano student of Dr. Gary Fisher at Nazareth,
was awarded Co-Second Place in the Advanced Category,
and will receive a tuition aid scholarship. Claire is a home schooler,
and is the daughter of Sarah and Carl Burtner.
Pianist Matthew
Day , a tenth-grader at Rush-Henrietta High School, was awarded
Co-Second Place in the Advanced Category, and will
receive a tuition aid scholarship. He is the son of Betty and Douglas
Day; her teacher at Nazareth is Dr. Gary Fisher.

Empire State Competition
The
Nazareth College Music Department Preparatory Division is very
pleased to announce that Helen Nezhdanova, piano student
of Dr. Gary Fisher, was awarded first place in the High School
Piano Division of the Empire State Competition, held on October
26 here at Nazareth. The Competition was held under the auspices
of the New York Stare Music Teachers Association, as part of
its annual state convention. Helen is a junior at Red Creek
High School, and is the daughter of Steven and Olga Swart, of
Sterling, New York. Last year, Helen was a first place winner
in the Prep Division's Scholarship Auditions.

Faculty News

Tara Noval,
violinist, will give a recital at the Curtis Performance Center
at Allendale Columbia School on Wednesday evening, March 10,
2004, at 7:00 PM. She will perform works by Mozart, Bruch,
Ysaye, Dvorak, and Wieniawski, and will be accompanied by
pianist, Barbara Noval. The concert is sponsored by
the Allendale Columbia Alumni Association. The school is located
at 519 Allens Creek Road, Rochester. Tickets are $5.00 at
the door. There will be a reception in the Dinning Commons
following the concert.
Dr.
Bonnie Choi recently received a grant from the New York
States Arts and Cultural Council for her Baroque ensemble
group, Air
de Cour to perform a series of concerts in Rochester.
The New York State Music Teachers Association will be holding
its annual convention here at Nazareth College on October
25 through 27, 2002. Several Prep Division faculty members
will be very much involved. Dr. Bonnie Choi,
a noted harpsichordist and member of the piano faculty here, will
be offering a lecture/demonstration entitled Articulation
in J.S. Bach's Keyboard Music. Dr. Gary Fisher
is serving as State Competition Coordinator, overseeing the
activities of both the nationally sponsored MTNA competitions
and the statewide Empire Competition. The Bach
Children's Chorus of Rochester, in residence at Nazareth
College and under the direction of Karla Krogstad, will
be featured in a significant world premiere of After the
City Wept, three songs for children's chorus, with
music by Stefania De Kenessey and commissioned poetry of Frederick
Turner. Finally, chair of the Nazareth collegiate music
department, Barbara Staropoli, SSJ, will be presenting a session
on vocal pedagogy.
Harpsichordist Bonnie Choi gave several solo
and chamber concerts last year. In the Fall, she was invited
to give a lecture demonstration and performed a solo recital
at the City Hall in Hong Kong. Shortly after that, she played
several concerts in New York State and Iowa City. Her baroque
chamber group, Air de Cour participated in the First Rochester
Early Music Festival, Live from Hochstein and the Good Friday
Concert series at Saint Anne Church in Rochester. Her engagement
to perform at the Trinity Church in New York City was postponed
due to the September 11 attack. In May, Choi adjudicated in
the New York State Music Teacher Association Achievement Test.
Dr.
Gary Fisher,
coordinator of the Prep Division and member of the piano
faculty, has been invited to present a master class for local
piano students on Sunday January 19, 2003. This annual
class, co-sponsored by the Rochester Piano Teachers Guild
and District 12 of the New York State Music Teachers Association,
will take place at the Memorial Art Gallery's Cutler Union.
David
Hult will be appearing this season with the Chamber
Music Society of Rochester.
Violinist
Boris Zapesochny and pianist Alla
Kuznetsov will be appearing in two upcoming recitals.
They will be presenting a chamber music program on Sunday,
November 10 at 3:00 PM in Wilmot Recital Hall.Their next program
will occur at the Salem Church on Sunday January 12, 2003
at 2:00 PM.
