Children Making Music is a class for 4-5 year olds designed to provide opportunities for children to sing, play classroom instruments, actively listen and move to music, and compose and improvise their own pieces, all in a welcoming yet structured group environment. The course will incorporate a variety of highly regarded pedagogical approaches, including Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze, among others. Developmentally appropriate musical experiences during early childhood, such as those presented in this class, provide children with a foundation for lifelong musical participation.
The class will meet for one hour on Wednesday afternoons for ten sessions.
A maximum of 15 students will be enrolled. Registration and full payment are required by the due date in order to ensure a place in the class.
Dr. Rachel Whitcomb, class instructor, is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Nazareth College. She earned her Ed.D. in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has ten years of experience teaching preschool and elementary music and holds Level One Certification in both Kodaly and Orff methodologies. At Nazareth College, Dr. Whitcomb teaches music education courses and supervises student teachers. She is a New York State certified music teacher. Dr. Whitcomb believes that all children have the innate potential to develop a wide range of meaningful skills through participation in early musical experiences such as those provided in the Children Making Music class.
