Summer Piano Camp
The Nazareth Summer Piano Camp is designed for students who enjoy playing the piano and sharing common interests with their peers. From the curious keyboard musician who has been taking weekly lessons to the more advanced player seriously considering a career in music, our students will tap into their own curiosity and creativity as they seek to expand versatility at the instrument. Our goal is to offer the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and experience in the language of music and the tools of music-making.
Participants should bring with them a selection ready for presentation in a group lesson and an informal performance setting.
This three-day workshop will be held on the beautiful grounds of the Pittsford campus of Nazareth College. It meets from Thursday, June 25 through Saturday, June 27, 2009. Activities will begin at 9:00 in the morning and go until 5:00 in the afternoon.

Children Making Music will be offering two musical experiences this summer, each of one week duration. They are designed to provide opportunities for children to sing, play classroom instruments, actively listen and move to music, and compose and improvise their own pieces, all in a welcoming yet structured group environment. The camp will incorporate a variety of highly regarded pedagogical approaches, including Orff, Kodály and Dalcroze, among others. Developmentally appropriate musical experiences during childhood, such as those presented in this camp, provide children with a foundation for lifelong musical participation.
The Sounds of Nature will be offered for 6-8 year olds. Children will discover the music of animals, plants and changes in weather through songs, chants, movement activities and creative endeavors.
Music Around the World will be offered for 9-11 year olds. Children will take a journey to far-away lands to become familiar with the musical traditions of other cultures through folk music, dance and instrumental activities.
Each class will meet for 2 1/2 hours each weekday for one week. A maximum of 20 students will be enrolled in each class. Registration and full payment are required by the due date (see below) to ensure a place in the class. There will be a 10-15 minute break each day, so please send a snack along with your child.
Dr. Rachel Whitcomb, class instructor, is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Nazareth College. She earned her Ed.D. in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has over ten years of experience teaching preschool and elementary music and holds Level One Certification in both Kodály and Orff methodologies. At Nazareth College, Dr. Whitcomb teaches music education courses and supervises student teachers. She is a New York State certified music teacher. Dr. Whitcomb believes that all children have the innate potential to develop a wide range of meaningful skills through participation in early musical experiences such as those provided in the Children Making Music class.
Jill DiPonzio, graduate assistant and co-instructor for Children Making Music, is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Music Education at Nazareth College. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Nazareth College (2007). Jill currently teaches elementary general music (grades 1-5) and 5th grade chorus at Fyle Elementary School in the Rush-Henrietta Central School District.
