Housing
You will live in the George Residence Hall, located on the Nazareth College campus. Each room is single occupancy and shares a bathroom with the single room next to it. Shower areas are communal, and are separated by gender. You will room with other international students who are participating in other academic programs at Nazareth throughout the summer.
Each floor has a kitchen with a sink, oven, stove, and microwave. There are washers and dryers located on each floor. There is a large common area on the first floor of George Hall with a television, table, ping pong tables, and couches for your use. You may visit the Center for International Education to place any local/long distance calls. Hotel accommodations on the trips to Albany and New York City will be double occupancy. The dormitory and hotel costs will be paid directly by the Institute.
You may want to pack a hair dryer, alarm clock, iron, shaver, computer, etc, if you will require them during your stay. Pack these things in your plane carry-on, not in your checked baggage. The U.S. relies on alternating current, 60 cycles, 110 volts. All electrical equipment should be compatible with these standards or an adapter should be brought along as well.
Transportation
Your flights to and from the United States and the flight from Rochester to Washington, D.C at the end of the program will all be pre-arranged and paid directly by the Institute. Information will be given to you at the appropriate time.
We will meet you at the Greater Rochester International Airport in Rochester, New York, on Saturday, June 28. We will take you back to the Rochester airport on Friday, July 25, for your flight to Washington, D.C. and the final portion of the program. Your departure to home will be from Washington, D.C.
All campus buildings are within walking distance of your residence hall. Activities have been planned for your stay; you will be traveling locally on vans and/or buses when necessary. Since we have another international collegiate program running almost simultaneously, many activities have been planned for both groups to attend. Everyone will also receive public bus route schedules, and you are more than welcome to take advantage of this transportation during your free time.
Health Care
Remember to bring an adequate supply of any necessary prescription medicines and an extra pair of glasses if needed. You should carry these items with you on the plane, not in your checked baggage.
The U.S. does not have a comprehensive national health care system; most American health care is paid for by private insurance. The Department of State will enroll you in a basic health care plan for the period of June 28-July 25, 2008. If you need medical care at any time, please notify a member of the Institute staff.
Nazareth's department of health services will be available for minor injuries and supplies. Summer 2008 hours for the health services office are:
June 2-August 7
Mondays and Thursdays 8:00 a.m.-12 noon
Research Facilities
The Institute is not primarily for research, but Nazareth's Lorette Wilmot Library will be open for your use and enjoyment. You will receive a card for full library privileges during the initial orientation session, and a computer access number to use the university's system which includes e-mail and Internet access. Orientation sessions for the library and computer system will be held the first week of the program.
Clothing
Casual attire is normal for both genders in Rochester. Bring light recreational clothing (ie: jeans, hooded sweatshirts, light sweaters, capris, shorts, T-shirts) and comfortable shoes (sneakers, supportive sandals) for field trips, exercise, and sightseeing. A light jacket or wind-breaker is especially recommended. Casual clothing will also be acceptable for all field trips unless otherwise specified.
Men may want to bring a coat and tie or equivalent traditional dress. Similarly, women may want a dress or skirt and blouse or equivalent traditional dress. Both men and women should pack a pair of nice shoes.
Recreational Facilities
Nazareth offers many physical fitness and recreational opportunities, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, sand volleyball court, all-weather track, and fitness center. Many people enjoy running down to the Erie Canal or Schoen Place, a small canal-side shopping and dining area. Bring appropriate clothing for any recreational activities you enjoy (sweatpants, T-shirts). Your identification pass provides access to the fitness center for your stay on campus.
