Financial Aid Opportunities for Students

The Big Picture

The Center for International Education at Nazareth actively promotes student efforts to obtain funding related to international research and study. Grant funding may be obtained from a variety of sources, and students are encouraged to consult with their faculty advisors and professors in order to focus on the best sources of funding.

Undergraduate students matriculated at Nazareth College generally receive their regular amount of financial aid and grant monies when they engage in a semester-long or year-long study abroad program sponsored by Nazareth College. (College funding is not available for the cost of airfare to and from the international study site.)

Graduate students can also find scholarship sources for language study, disciplinary study, research and teaching with Government and foundation programs. In addition to consulting the list below, graduate students should search the websites of major foundations that promote specific initiatives. A useful list is found in on this website under faculty research.

Students should look for funding both from private foundations and government sources, where the funding applies to the country/culture and the student's study interest. In the case of U.S. Government funding, the student should not be deterred by the name or type of the granting department or the name of the specific legislative funding. Government funding programs provide a detailed explanation of the requirements for the recipient.

Students who intend to do detailed searches for funding will find that the sources can be divided into categories. It is essential that students search all categories for funding.

  • government agency funding national private agencies and other non-profit organizations
  • state government agencies
  • local foundations and service organizations located in the students home town area

A student's home state of residence may have available funding. Frequently, professional clubs and services organizations in the student's home town are looking for opportunities to support educational projects.

The U.S. Department of Defense provides NSEP grants in a national effort to educate U.S. citizens to: understand foreign languages and cultures: strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness; and enhance international cooperation and U.S. national security.

Each year, the Department of Defense publishes a list of NSEP areas of interest and grant applicants are strongly encouraged to focus their efforts on one or a combination of countries, languages, and/or fields of study on the list. However, NSEP remains interested in encouraging grant applications for projects focusing on other countries, world regions, and languages where a compelling argument can be made that an increased national capacity represents an important contribution to U.S. national security. After completion of the study abroad, grant recipients perform a period of service in one of several U.S. Government agencies (Defense, State Department; Commerce; etc.), equal to the length of time of the grant.
