Course Descriptions
Beginning/Intermediate Italian (3 credits)
This course will begin with a general review of grammar and construction, followed by closer attention to more advanced constructions and vocabulary. The readings will be short and varied. The Intermediate Italian course is intended for students with at least one year of college Italian.
Twentieth Century Italian Writers (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to 20th century writers from various regions of Italy. Using their works, students will examine and compare north, central, south and insular Italy from the literary perspective, emphasizing cultural and traditional differences. Each author's work is placed in the historical currents of the contemporary period and region of Italy.
Architecture and Urban Development in Italy (3 credits)
The major theories, styles and personalities in Italian architecture from classic times to the present will be examined in the format of class lectures and field trips. Although the traditional historic chronology will be followed, and the identification of the styles will be covered, all of this will be done in an urban context. The study of the development of Italian cities will parallel the study of architecture, and will trace the chronology of architectural currents.
