About

The Nazareth College Science and Mathematics Scholars Program (SaMS) is supported by an award from the National Science Foundation.  This program makes grants to insitutions of higher education to support academically talented students pursuing degree programs in science and mathematics with demonstrated financial need. Six scholarships were awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year for students who intend to major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental science, or mathematics and who will enter Nazareth as full-time freshman.

In fall 2010, Nazareth will award scholarships of up to $10,000 per year for incoming first-year students, transfer students, and current Nazareth students at the junior-level status.  Scholarships are renewable each year as long as the recipient continues to meet the eligibility criteria.  The SaMs Program will continue through the spring 2013, and then will be subject to renewal by the National Science Foundation.

Opportunities for students in the SaMs program include participation in an academic learning community, enhanced advisement, peer mentoring, field trips and seminars related to career exploration, and opportunities to engage in undergraduate research and/or industrial internships.

SaMs Participants are required to:

  • Meet regularly with faculty advisor
  • Participate in all SaMs events
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher with grades of B- or above in all courses counting towards major
  • Complete SaMs surveys and assessment forms
