Christina E. Gallis
The Chemistry Department is proud to announce that Christina
E. Gallis of Irondequoit, N.Y., is the recipient of a $300.00 Undergraduate
Travel
Grant from the Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society. Christina
will use this support to present her research findings at the
227th American Chemical Society National Meeting in Anaheim, CA in March.
Gallis, a junior biochemistry major, began this research
during the
summer of 2003 as part of Nazareth's Summer Visions Program, which is
generously supported by Nazareth College alumna, Dr. Paula
Satterly-Childs. Gallis' research involved the combinatorial synthesis
of a small molecule library constructed around a novel
2-amino-4H-benzothiazine nucleus. Her research is part of a larger
effort to develop novel biosensors and tools for molecular recognition.
This work was conducted under the collaborative guidance of Dr. Timm
Knoerzer, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Nazareth College and Dr.
Benjamin Miller, Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University
of Rochester Medical Center and Center for Future Health.
Gallis received her award after submitting a proposal
that was reviewed
by scientific professionals in the local community. Competition for
these awards is highly competitive given the quality of applicants from
other local institutions.
