Gold Alumni Award 2009

Congratulations to Chemistry Alum Shannon Bice Olsson (U '99) on being awarded the GOLD Alumni Award for young alums.  This is the highest honor the college bestows on alumni from the past decade.

Shannon Olsson is currently serving as Project Leader in the Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany.  Dr. Olsson’s journey to Germany truly began with Nazareth College.  With encouragement to apply for a Fulbright at Nazareth, she was fortunate to spend a year at Lund University in Sweden following graduation in 1999.  After receiving her doctorate from Cornell University in 2005, Dr. Olsson moved to Los Angeles to study marine chemocommunication.  She is now part of an EU sponsored project to develop a new class of technology for infochemical communication based upon the pheromone communication system of moths.  This chemical messaging technology can be use for such applications as search and rescue operations and unexploded ordinance and mine localization.

Dr. Olsson was nominated for this award by Dr. Jack Bopp.
