Culture Courses

College Credit Courses | Enrichment Classes for Adults | Foreign Languages Department

Nazareth College offers undergraduate credit courses as well as non-credit classes. All Italian classes are held in the Casa Italiana. If you are a serious student of Italian language, register for a college credit course in Italian language or literature. Advanced students travel abroad to further their studies at universities in Italy.

Just beginning your study of Italian? Don't worry — there are courses for your ability level and interest, too. Enjoyable non-credit courses give you plenty of opportunity to converse in Italian with others as you progress at your own pace.

COLLEGE CREDIT COURSES

Elementary Italian I: ITL 101
Beginning level work in the language. Practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Emphasis on communicative proficiency. Introduction to the basic vocabulary, expressions, and structures of Italian and to the culture of Italy.

Intermediate Italian I: ITL 103
Intermediate level work in the language, adding more extensive practice in the four basic language skills. A review of the grammar and continued emphasis on communicative proficiency. Expansion of the study of the Italian culture.

Advanced Composition and Conversation I: ITL 201
A thorough review of the finer points of grammatical structure. Development of oral expression in everyday Italian and attention to idiomatic expressions. Short literary and cultural readings.

Italian Culture and Cinematography: ITL 204
Discussion of Italian films and their links to literary, social, and political trends to show the significant changes occurring in Italian society in the postwar period. Students will view and discuss film sequences and critical reviews. There are introductory lectures to the films. A short history of Italian political development is included.

Special Topics — Women's Voices: ITL 310
Course studies a major 20th century author analyzing her literary perspectives individually and in the context of the major currents of 20th century Italian literature.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES FOR ADULTS
The Casa Italiana offers enrichment classes that make learning Italian and the Italian way of life easy and rewarding. Within the lovely Casa setting, students are guided by experienced and supportive instructors. A maximum of 12 students per class ensure personal attention and opportunities to practice Italian in class.

Level I
For those who want to learn and practice the basics of the Italian language while exploring Italian culture. Emphasis is on providing a beginner's knowledge of Italian through situational contexts. Basic conversation skills and grammar. A great class for anyone planning to travel to Italy.

A complete immersion into contemporary Italian language and culture with conversation on routine activities and topics that concern Italian society today.

Il Circolo
This fall surround yourself in the warmth and splendor of Italy by joining our Circolo (circle) of Casa friends for a stimulating and fun approach to learning about the Italian language and culture. Through discussions, readings, music, slides, films, and more, immerse yourself in the finest that Italy has to offer while making new friends who share your passion for things Italian.

La cucina italiana
Italy is one of the culinary capitals of the world. Each of its great cities exhibits its own exciting and colorful cuisine. In this class, Bernardina Masci, a professional cook and native Italian, will prepare examples of regional cuisine that has made the Italian kitchen justly famous. This session will feature cuisine from the Mediterranean Coast, from the cities of Rome through Amalfi.  Sample and learn how to make such dishes as gnocchi alla romana con burro e parmigiano reggiano, carciofi alla griglia with filetto di pollo, and spaghetti al limone with caprese salad and desserts of the region. The splendor of Italy and the wonders of its kitchen await you. Buon Appetito!
