Student Scholarship

There are two main things that bind all College of Arts and Sciences students together: a dedication to excellence, and a burning desire to gain wisdom from the diverse world around them. College of the Arts and Sciences' students have achieved excellence in their major areas of study, taken part in Nazareth's service learning program, interned with the New York State Legislature, and won prestigious Fulbright grants to locales such as Australia, Egypt, and Korea.

Nazareth Students embrace the diverse opportunities the College offers, and involved citizens of their communities and, often, of the world.

The below group of student scholars is from the art department:

"The seashell is actually a functional teapot, and is titled Venus's Cry. On the interior of the shell there is text referring to various domestic violence statistics. I often address feminine issues in my work, and I do a lot of 'inside/outside' pieces that have a beautiful exterior and ugly or surprising interior.

As far as teaching goes, I am interested in the brain-based learning theories, and left brain/right brain studies. I am intrigued by how people's minds operate for various skills and functions, and how people develop strengths in certain areas and not in others."

"I prefer media that allow controlled, fast mark making with fluid, lively movement and an opportunity to create some bold contrast. Like a cartoonist, I begin with basic shapes and work my way into details. Once I learn a fabric, animal, or texture, I can then distort it, take it apart, or juxtapose it with something else for desired effect.

I try to express my reactions to the world through analogies and symbols, while referring to tattoo artists, contemporary illustrators, song lyrics, and even children for inspiration. I strive to create edgy, sophisticated artwork that surprises viewers and perhaps disturbs them a little."
