Mission
The College of Arts and Sciences engages students with focused major programs in liberal studies and fine arts and with an undergraduate core curriculum in these areas. The faculty, through teaching, research and creative pursuits, foster an environment where the quest for knowledge is considered valuable for its own sake as well as useful preparation for students' future endeavors. In this environment students develop the habits of mind of thoughtful, adaptable, creative and productive human beings.
Teaching and Learning Goals in the College of Arts and Sciences Curricula
Students completing program curricula in the College of Arts and Sciences will:
| 1. attain a disciplinary perspective in the liberal arts and sciences: i.e., define the content, the language, the discipline’s mode of inquiry and the research methods of philosophy, the visual and performing arts, literature, the social and natural sciences, mathematics, history and religious studies. |
2. develop creative, analytical, quantitative, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities |
3. communicate effectively through critical reading, writing and oral presentation skills |
4. develop and express an aesthetic sensibility |
5. inspire and be inspired by a passion for intellectual engagement with people and ideas |
6. be culturally competent and civically engaged global citizens |
7. be challenged to articulate and live out consistent and responsible ethical beliefs |
