The Partners for Learning Program of Nazareth College of Rochester, New York, seeks to engage Nazareth students in partnerships with the children, teachers, and staff of seven (7) urban sites. These partnerships are designed to help raise the academic performance and educational aspirations of the children while heightening the social awareness and sharpening the professional skills of Nazareth students.

The Partners work within classrooms at School #4, School #36 (Rochester City School District), and Hope Hall, tutoring small groups or one-on-one with students. Their work is assigned and supervised by individual teachers.

The programs at the YMCA at Lewis Street Center, Southwest Community Center (SWAN), the Growing Place at Corpus Christi, and School #14 provide Partners with an experience of an after-school tutoring program. Nazareth students work one-on-one with students who have been recommended by teachers for extra help in specific areas. Partners get experience in planning and developing materials necessary for tutoring.

(Nazareth College is committed to encouraging and facilitating community service by members of the Nazareth College community, and also recognizes that many of our students need jobs to pay for their educational expenses. Students who serve in the Partners for Learning Program are paid $6.50 per hour through College Work Study. There are a limited number of positions available for students who are not eligible for work study.)

Partners for Serving

Partners for Serving is a new program that places Nazareth College students at one of four human service agencies in Monroe County. Partners will work with St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center, Sojourner House, CHILD, and Compeer. At these sites, Partners will provide mentoring and care for homeless youth, people in need of health care, youth affected by the loss of a parent or sibling, and youth with mental health concerns. Partners for Serving requires a 10 hour commitment per week, with the majority of those hours occurring early evenings and on weekends. Workshops and trainings will be required. This program is new and the new Partners will play a large role in making this program a success from the beginning. We are looking for people who are dedicated, have great problem solving and communication skills, have an interest in helping, have leadership skills, and work well as a member of a team.

Partners for Serving is open to all majors and will most likely have work study and non-work study positions. If you are interested in learning more about Partners for Serving, please open the attached pdf file and complete the attached interest form. Please drop off the completed form to Campus Ministry, where the Partners Programs are housed (Shults Center), or submit the completed form to:
