The Office of Career Services is committed to providing a wide variety of services to meet the needs of Nazareth College students and alumni. From helping students make their first tentative career choices to assisting with a professional job or graduate school search, our mission is to help students and alumni achieve their full potential.

We welcome any questions students might have about career or life planning, including:

  • What do I want to do with my life?
  • Which major should I select?
  • What can I do with my major?
  • How can I get the experience I need to get hired?
  • How can I best market myself to employers?

To schedule an individual appointment with a professional staff member, students and alumni should call the Career Services Office at (585) 389-2878.

Additional On-Line Sources

JOB SEARCH/PLACEMENT SERVICES

On-Campus Recruiting - Employing organizations and graduate/professional schools visit Nazareth College each year to meet with interested students. A list of organizations visiting the campus can be located in the Job Fairs & On-Campus Recruitment section of this homepage. Students are invited to visit the website frequently, and in addition, targeted e-mails are sent to students notifying them of upcoming visits. On-campus interview sign-ups occur throughout the academic year in the Office of Career Services. Graduating seniors and graduate students should regularly check the schedule for any additions.

Resume Assistance - The Career Services staff meets regularly with students on an individual basis to develop a professional resume. Students and alumni are welcome to return for additional help as needed. Resumes are developed on a computer, and students often leave with a finished resume saved electronically. Extensive information on Resumes & Cover Letters is available on the Career Services website.

Job Search Consultation - Students interested in consulting with a professional about their job or graduate school search may meet with the Director, Assistant Director, or Career Counselor by appointment. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are unsure of how to get started or who would like to investigate new approaches to the job search process.

Workshops - The Career Services Office regularly schedules workshops on Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills, Graduate School Search, and Job Search. A schedule is mailed to all students each semester. No advance sign-up is required. Fall Workshop Schedule.

NazLink/Career Services Website - Job Postings are listed through our online NazLink system and include full-time, part-time and work study employment opportunities. Students and alumni are encouraged to register for NazLink to search available positions and to save their search so they can receive e-mail notification when a new position is added that matches their search criteria. In addition, the website includes all on-campus recruitment activities, a section on an Internet Job Search, and links appropriate for various majors offered by Nazareth College.

Credential Service - Nazareth alumni, seniors, graduate students, and students meeting state teacher certification requirements may establish a Credential File containing letters of recommendation. This file may be used by either employers or graduate schools in the application/selection process. Registration for this service is required and a $10 fee is charged to set up the file. This fee covers the first 5 copies of the file mailed to employers/graduate schools. Subsequent copies cost $2 each.

Job Fairs & Special Programs - Nazareth College participates in special recruitment programs throughout the year coordinated by the Office of Career Services (for example, Teacher Recruitment Day and the Rochester Area Career Expo). These events draw a wide variety of recruiters from the Rochester area, and for teaching candidates, from across the country. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in these opportunities to establish connections with prospective employers.

WHEN SHOULD A STUDENT VISIT CAREER SERVICES?

We like to see students are early as possible, preferably during the freshman year. That makes it easy for us to remember students individually, and assist them when that perfect opportunity comes across our desks! The better and earlier we get to know each student, the easier the career search becomes. In addition, there are specific precipitating events that bring students in, including uncertainty of major, uncertainty of career, resume help, graduate school assistance, and more.

WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?
HOW CAN MY SON OR DAUGHTER GET ONE?

An INTERNSHIP is an opportunity to get pre-professional experience outside the classroom. There is no standard internship - it can be paid or unpaid, full or part-time, closely supervised or entrepreneurial. Internships that are credit bearing must be approved and supervised by the college. Individual departments often arrange internships for the students in their programs. Career Services also works closely with students to help facilitate this process. In addition, Al Cabral, faculty member in the Business, Economics, and Management Department, coordinates the campus-wide internships program at Nazareth College. While not all majors require an internship, we know that employers truly value that type of experience, and that students who participate in these pre-professional experiences will have an advantage in the job search process. Students interested in pursuing an internship can come to Career Services, contact Mr. Cabral, or set up an appointment with their faculty advisor.

Washington Internship: Institute for Experiential Learning - The Premier Internship Program in Washington, DC -This opportunity has a formal link to Nazareth College. Includes internships at the State Department, USAID, the Defense Department, and other governmental agencies. Students interested in pursuing this opportunity should contact Dr. Sharon Murphy, Professor of Political Science.

Library of Congress, Washington D.C. Internship -The Office of Alumni Relations and the Washington DC Chapter of the Nazareth Alumni Association offer a program that enables a Nazareth College student (current freshman, sophomore, or junior) to do public service work in Washington, DC during the summer without losing the benefit of summer earnings necessary to pay tuition.

The program works as follows: one Nazareth College student is selected from an applicant pool to intern in the Library of Congress for eight weeks from early June to late July. A Nazareth alumna/us, who lives and works in the Washington, DC area, provides free housing. The student does not receive a salary, but does receive a $1,500 remission in tuition* for the following academic year, plus a $1000 stipend for food and incidentals. In addition, there will be opportunities provided to network with Nazareth College alumni and to explore the nation's capital with them. The student is required to provide his/her own transportation to and from Washington, DC.

This program provides a Nazareth College student with a unique opportunity to sample a career in public service, experience an exciting city, gain important job skills and meet new people -- while at the same time contributing financially to his/her college expenses.

If you are interested in being considered for this program, or if you have questions about it, we invite you to contact the Office of Alumni Relations at extension (585) 389-2404.

*If tuition is already covered through scholarship aid, only the $1000 stipend will be provided.

HELP FOR UNDECLARED STUDENTS

Career Services offers a wide variety of services to help students who are unsure of their major, or are considering changing their major.

  • Exploring Self, Majors & Careers - held each semester, this one-credit course guides students through self-assessment and decision-making activities, while providing information on valuable resources.
  • Exploring Major Options Workshop - held each fall semester, Career Services collaborates with the Director of Freshman Retention, Academic Advisement, and the Coordinator of Internships to offer this program. We help students understand how to evaluate their interests and strengths and how to explore their options in productive ways. Students are encouraged to complete the Myers Briggs Type Inventory, and visit one of the sponsoring offices for a follow-up appointment. To view a handout students are encouraged to use in exploring a major, click here.
  • Individual Appointments - the Director, Assistant Director, and Career Counselor are available to meet individually with students to assess their situation and help them decide an appropriate action plan.
  • Discover - A computer-based program containing comprehensive information about different careers, as well as an interest inventory and other exercises designed to assist with the information gathering and decision-making process. Students are encouraged to make an appointment with a professional staff member prior to using this program.
  • Liberal Arts Education - One of the benefits of your son or daughter attending a liberal arts college is that they will take courses across the curriculum. We have found that this variety really helps students to figure out what they like to study. In choosing a major, a strong interest in the content is one of the most important criteria students should consider in making this decision.

SUCCESS OF NAZARETH COLLEGE GRADUATES
