Frequently Asked Questions
Professional Internship Program at Nazareth College
What is an internship?
An internship is a course that combines pre-professional work experience with targeted academic assignments. All internships earn academic credit.
How many internships can I do?
You can earn up to six internship credits at Nazareth. For the most part, that translates into two three-credit internships. There are also a few special six-credit internships available.
How many hours do I work in an internship?
Internships that are worth three academic credits require between 8 and 16 on site work hours. Six credit internships are full time, requiring at least 32 hours work. All internships last one semester (including summer internships).
Who is eligible to do internships?
Juniors and seniors from all majors with a grade point average of 2.5 or better and have the approval of their faculty advisor are eligible. Keep in mind that a few majors require internships, and those majors may have unique eligibility requirements. If you are not sure whether or not your major requires an internship, check with your Faculty Advisor or the college catalog.
Does an internship fit into my major?
YES! Students from virtually every major at Nazareth have completed internships. An internship enables you to connect the knowledge and skills you have gained in your coursework with real world applications, gives you insights into the dynamics of the field in which you are working, and empowers you to make more mature career decisions. Those are valuable things for all students to learn.
An internship can also provide you with the answer to that age-old question: "What do I do with a major in...?"
Finally, if your plans include graduate school, an internship can be helpful. Many graduate schools look for evidence of experience in the field, and an internship can provide that experience.
If an internship is a course, do I have to do homework?
Do I get a grade?
Yes! A three-credit internship requires attendance at three two-hour internship seminars and writing three short reflective papers. It also requires a semester-end performance evaluation by your site supervisor and an evaluation of transferable academic skills by you. If your internship is outside the greater Rochester area, an additional writing assignment is substituted for the seminars. Six-credit internships have additional writing requirements, which are negotiated individually between the student and the Director of Internships. All internships are graded pass/fail.

How do I get an internship?
There are basically two ways to get an internship. The first is to apply for internships that the college has already developed. You do this by applying for internships through your major department or through the Internships office. This happens every semester-in early November for spring internships and in early April for both summer and fall internships. In order to see what internships are available, click here. In addition, you can also link to a number of general internship directories.
The second way is to set up your own internship. This is called an Independent Internship. The Internships office has information on how to do this and can help you target organizations that would be likely to be interested in sponsoring an internship for you.
You generally need a resume and possibly a portfolio to apply for internships. The Career Services department can help you put together a resume.
Where are internships located?
Most college-sponsored internships are located in the greater Rochester area. Independent Internships can be wherever you find them-in your hometown, a major city or anywhere in the world. Speaking of the world, it is possible to arrange an internship through the college in one of these exciting places:
- Washington, D.C., with the Nazareth College Alumni Association in the summer or the Institute for Experiential Learning any time during the year.
Albany, with either the State Legislature or State Government in either the fall or spring semesters.
- Disneyworld in Orlando, any time during the year.
- London, England through the University of Richmond in London.
- Through the Nazareth study aboard programs, you can do an internship in Rennes, France; Pescara, Italy; Valencia, Spain; or Berlin, Germany.
Contact the Internships office to find out detailed information about these and other opportunities.
Now that I have read this, what do I do?
Start planning to do an internship! Meet with your Faculty Advisor to discuss how and when an internship fits into your academic program. Visit the Internships office to explore your options. Attend an Internship Information meeting, held once every semester. Browse through the internship listings and directories on the Nazareth web site. Make an appointment with Career Services to evaluate your resume and to work on your job search skills.
OK, last question. Where is the Internships office?
It is in Golisano Academic Center 123. Al Cabral is the Director of Internships. His phone extension is 2571 and his e-mail address is acabral8@naz.edu. Stop by, give a call, or send a message. Hey, it's your future! Live it!
