Golden Flyers win key Empire 8 Conference match

ROCHESER, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2006) -- Sophomore Laura Persico (pictured) pounded out a career-high 29 kills to go with 14 digs and three service aces Tuesday as Nazareth won a key Empire 8 Conference match in women's volleyball over St. John Fisher. Scores were 27-30, 30-23, 30-20, 22-30, 15-4.

The victory boosted Nazareth's Empire 8 Conference record to 2-1. The Golden Flyers are 11-17 overall. Fisher slipped to 1-2 in the Empire 8 and 6-16 overall.

Persico had two of her service aces and two kills in the fifth and deciding game as Nazareth scored the first six points and 10 of the first 11. Four other Nazareth players finished with double figures in kills, led by junior Elizabeth Tregan with 16. Freshman Carra Vanderstyne also reached a career high with 14 kills. Hillary Adam had 11 kills and Katelynn Reed 10.

Junior setter Elyse Monje played all five games and delivered 36 assists. Freshman libero Natasha Villane had 16 digs.

Nazareth competes again this weekend at the Empire 8 Crossover at Elmira. The Golden Flyers play Hartwick and Ithaca Saturday and Utica and Elmira Sunday. The top four conference finisher qualify for the E8 Tournament Nov. 4 at a site to be determined.
