Golden Flyers (17-21) fall in NCAA opener

RAPIDS, Mich. (Nov. 9, 2006) -- Eleventh-ranked
Calvin made short work of Nazareth Thursday in
the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament
for women's volleyball. The host Knights improved
to 33-1 overall in 2006 with a three-game sweep
of the Golden Flyers, who completed their season
at 17-21. Scores were 30-12, 30-24, 30-6.
Calvin moves into Friday's semifinals of the
eight-team Great Lakes Regional vs. Hope College.
Hiram and Wittenberg play in the other semifinal
match.
Nazareth was the most competitive in the second
game when the Golden Flyers nearly overcame an
11-point deficit. Calvin led 21-10, before Nazareth
went on a 14-4 scoring spree to close within 26-24.
Freshman Hillary Adam (pictured) had three of
her team-high six kills for Nazareth during the
run. Calvin regrouped, though, to score the last
four points to win the game and then easily won
the third game.
Freshman Katelynn Reed had four kills and one
block, junior Elizabeth Tregan added three kills
and two aces and freshman setter Kate Zwickl had
13 assists. |
