PERSICO NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
Wickens named E8 Coach of the Year for women's volleyball

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2006) -- Laura Persico (pictured), a sophomore outside hitter on the Nazareth College women's volleyball team, has been honored as a first-team selection on the Empire 8 Conference all-star team.

The all-star teams were selected through voting conducted by the conference's eight head coaches. Cal Wickens, Nazareth's fourth-year head coach, was named Coach of the Year.

Second-team selections for Nazareth were junior setter Elyse Monje and junior outside hitter Elizabeth Tregan. Freshman Katelynn Reed made honorable mention and freshman Carra Vanderstyne was the Golden Flyers' representative as Sportswoman of the Year.

Persico, of Ravena, N.Y. and a graduate of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, played in 134 of Nazareth's 140 games in 2006 and led the team in kills with 475 (3.54 per game). She also ranked second in service aces (72) and digs (421).

Monje, of Newark, N.Y. and a graduate of Newark High School, played in 111 games and led the Golden Flyers in assists with 708, including a season-best 42 assists against RIT on Oct. 11. Tregan, of Plattsburgh, N.Y. and a graduate of Plattsburgh High School, played in 135 games and contributed 366 kills (2.71 per game). She also was a second-team all-conference selection in 2005. Reed, of Horseheads, N.Y. and a graduate of Horseheads High School, led the Golden Flyers in service aces (79) and hitting percentage (.307). She twice was honored as the conference's Rookie of the Week.

Vanderstyne, of Victor, N.Y. and a graduate of Victor High School, was selected Sportswoman of the year. She was noted among the players in the conference who distinguished themselves for outstanding sportsmanship and consistently exhibited traits that were in line with Nazareth's educational mission.

Wickens guided the Golden Flyers to their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance and the second in his four seasons as head coach. He brings a record 76-66 into this week's tournament.
