ERIE, Pa. (Jan. 10, 2007) -- Sophomore Joe Petzoldt had 17 kills and 10 digs and junior Tom Maving added 13 kills Wednesday as Nazareth opened its 2007 men's volleyball season in successful fashion with a five-game victory over host Mercyhurst. Scores were 30-23, 30-22, 22-30, 25-30, 15-9.

The match was the season opener for the Golden Flyers, who finished 20-9 in 2006, just their second season of intercollegiate play. Nazareth plays again Jan. 19 at Springfield.

Nazareth posted hitting percentages of .367 and .364 in winning the first two games. After Mercyhurst came back to win the next two games, Nazareth had eight kills against just two hitting errors in the decisive fifth game. Senior Shaun Tyszka had one kills and three blocks in the fifth game and sophomore setter had seven of his 56 assists. Leahy (pictured) also had 10 digs in the match.

Junior Kellen Gambeski had nine kills in 18 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage and newcomer Eric Clemens also had nine kills (including the last three points of the match) and eight digs.
