Mass. (Mar. 4, 2007) -- Nazareth defeated eighth-ranked
Clarke College in four games-- 30-25, 30-26, 26-30,
30-20 to claim another tournament championship.
Junior Tom Maving (pictured) was named tournament
MVP while sophomore Joe Petzoldt was named to
the all-tournament team.
Nazareth's volleyball team clinched a birth in
the championship match after defeating 10th-ranked
MIT in four games 30-26, 30-32, 30-26, 30-21 earlier
Sunday. The Golden Flyers, ranked seventh nationally,
have won 15 consecutive matches and improve their
record to 17-3 overall after their two victories
Sunday.
In the championship match against Clarke, junior
Tom Maving recorded a team-high 22 kills while
sophomore Joe Petzoldt added 14 kills for Nazareth.
Senior Shaun Tyszka recorded nine kills and eight
assisted blocks. Junior Kellen Gambeski and sophomore
Kelvin Rolle each added eight additional kills
to the Golden Flyers' balanced attack. Sophomores
Frank Leahy and Chris DeHority also played well
as they recorded 56 assists and 11 digs respectively.
In the match against MIT, Petzoldt and Maving
helped lead the Golden Flyers to victory as they
recorded 21 and 20 kills respectively. Leahy started
many of Nazareth's attacks as he ended up with
63 assists. Additionally, DeHority had a team-high
15 digs while Petzoldt added 10 digs and Tyszka
had eight assisted blocks.
The Golden Flyers return to action Wednesday
at Medaille at 7 p.m. in a NECVA Conference match.
