N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2007) -- Sophomore Brandon Wheeler
(pictured) turned in a fourth-place finish Sunday
at the NYSCTC Pentathlon Championship hosted by
Ithaca College at Cornell University's Barton
Hall.
Wheeler amassed a school-record 3,115 points
in the five-event competition and earned five
team points for the Golden Flyers, who compete
again this weekend at the NYSCTC Championships
at St. Lawrence University.
Wheeler, of Penn Yan, N.Y. and a graduate of
Penn Yan Academy, won two of the five events --
the high jump with a school-record leap of 1.98
meter (6 feet, 6 inches) and the 1,000-meter run
with a time of 2:52.80. He finished third in the
long jump with a school-record leap of 6.12 meters
(20 feet, 1 inch), seventh in the shot put (8.65
meters / 28 feet, 4 1/2 inches) and ninth in the
55-meter hurdles (9.15 seconds).
In
the women's pentathlon event, freshman Melissa
Cutcliffe (Eden HS/Pavilion, NY) finished seventh
for the Golden Flyers to earn two team points
for this weekend's meet. She amassed 2,617 points
with her best finish a third in the shot put with
a toss of 9.28 meters (30 feet, 5 1/2 inches).
She was sixth in the high jump (1.46 meters /
4 feet, 9 1/2 inches); eighth in the long jump
(4.74 meters / 15 feet, 6 1/2 inches); 10th in
the 55-meter hurdles (9.67 seconds) and 14th in
the 800-meter run (2:54.50).
