LEONARD LOSES IN SEMIFINALS

ITHACA, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2006) -- Nazareth sophomore Rachel Leonard (pictured) lost a close semifinal match in straight sets Saturday at the NYSWCAA women's tennis championships at Cornell.

Leonard, seeded third, lost for just the second times this season in singles as she fell to Rochester's Cassie Webster, 6-4, 6-4. Now 16-2 overall, Leonard advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Union's Brittany Miller. On Friday, Leonard defeated Ithaca's Rachel Gunderson 6-4, 6-4.

In other tournament results, freshman Jackie Martinez won her first-round match at fourth singles, defeating Cortland's Meg Cole in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. She lost her first match Saturday to William Smith's Sam Schraeter 6-3, 7-6. Senior Emily McAdoo also won her first-round match, defeating St. Lawrence's Sara Berneir at fifth singles 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. McAdoo was eliminated in her first match Saturday by second-seeded Katie Lee of NYU 6-0, 6-3.
