GOLDEN FLYERS BREAK MORE RECORDS AT FREDONIA MEET
MEN'S RESULTS | WOMEN'S RESULTS

FREDONIA, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2004) -- Nazareth's women's swim team broke five more school records over the weekend as the Golden Flyers placed second at the three-day Fredonia Invitational. The men's team also swam well in finishing second overall.

Oswego was the team champion in both the men's and women's meets. In the women's meet, Oswego scored 1,291 points, followed by Nazareth (934), Fredonia (721), and Mercyhurst Northeast (44). In the men's meet, Oswego had 930, followed by Nazareth (744), Fredonia (364), and Mercyhurst Northeast (181).

For the women's team, freshman Emily Lesher (pictured) continued her dominating pace as she won three individual events and competed in four winning relays. She qualified for the NCAAs in both the 200- and 400-yard IM and set records in each race. She won the 200 in 2:10.17, breaking the mark set by All-American Cheryl Roubian by more than three seconds. Her winning time in the 400 was 4:36.84, shattering a record held by Lisa Elsemore by nearly five seconds.

Lesher also finished first in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:11.93. Nazareth broke two relay records, the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays. The foursome of Meghan Okoniewski, Aubrey Kirchoff, Amy Mehltretter, and Lesher participated in each relay. They swam 3:44.73 in the 400 to break a record that had stood since 1981. Their time of 8:11.00 in the 800 was more than two seconds better than the mark set in 1999. Lesher also was part of the winning 200- and 400-yard medley relays.

Kirchoff, a junior, eclipsed the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with her winning time of 1:10.44. She also won the 100-yard butterfly (:58.99). Mehltretter, a sophomore, won three races -- the 200-, 500-, and 1,650-yard freestyles. Freshman Katie Kukan was a winner in the 200-yard breaststroke. Okoniewski, a freshman, placed second in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and junior Jennifer Migliore was second in the 200-yard butterfly.

For the men's team, junior Matt Muratore won the 1,650-yard freestyles with a time of 17:49.77. Junior Dan Paganin finished first in both butterfly events, going :55.99 in the 100 and 2:07.04 in the 200.

Junior Chris Fello (pictured) finished second in three individual events -- the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and the 200 IM. Senior Paul Osetek was second in the 200-yard breaststroke and Muratore was second in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Golden Flyers compete again Saturday at Hartwick at 1 p.m.
