ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2006) –
Visiting Utica scored goals in each half Saturday as the Pioneers upset 18th-ranked Nazareth in women's soccer, 2-0.

The game, played at Golden Flyer Stadium, was the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams. Utica improved to 4-1 overall while the Golden Flyers dropped to 4-2. The victory was Utica's first over Nazareth in women's soccer since 1993. Nazareth had won the last 12 meetings.

Utica's Kerry Walsh (Franklin, MA) scored in the first half on a penalty kick after she was fouled in the penalty area. Nazareth had several opportunities to tie the score, but Utica goalie Ashley Kaufman (Enfield, CT) made eight saves to gain credit for the shutout.

Freshman Danielle Smith (Verona, NY) added an insurance goal for the Pioneers with less than five minutes to play.

Nazareth finished with a 14-9 edge in shots and junior goalie Shannon Burns (Albany, NY) made five saves for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth is off until next Saturday when the Golden Flyers visit Ithaca for another Empire 8 Conference game at 1 p.m.
