ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2006) -- Senior Rosie
Simiele scored twice and added two assists and
sophomore Rachel Cushman also scored twice Tuesday
as Nazareth blanked visiting Alfred in women's
soccer, 8-0, at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The Empire 8 Conference victory enabled the Golden
Flyers to improve to 3-3-1 in conference games
and 7-5-3 overall. Alfred is 0-6-1 and 2-13-1.
Nazareth still needs assistance from RIT against
St. John Fisher Wednesday in order to qualify
for next week's conference tournament. An RIT
win or tie against Fisher would land Nazareth
the fourth playoff spot. The E8 Tournament begins
Nov. 2.
The Golden Flyers had little difficulty against
Alfred and they enjoyed a 25-2 edge in shots and
a 12-1 advantage on corner kicks. Simiele's first
goal came just over four minutes into the game
as she converted a pass from Kelly Finn. Just
over a minute later Simiele assisted Cushman,
who headed in a crossing pass. Cushman scored
her team-leading seventh goal in the 19th minute
to make the score 3-0 before halftime.
Nazareth scored five more times in the second
half with Simiele picking up her second assist
of the game on a goal by Julie Birbilis (pictured)
. Finn and Simiele also scored in the second half,
with Birbilis picking up assists on each.
Freshmen Kathleen Niland and Caitlin Welch each
netted their first career goals.
Nazareth used three goalkeepers with junior Shannon
Burns getting credit for one save in the first
45 minutes. Freshmen Polly Muehlenkamp and Kiera
DeNoyer also played.
Nazareth closes out the regular-season portion
of its schedule Saturday at Union at 1 p.m.
