N.Y. (Sept. 3, 2006) – Nazareth's
Rosie Simiele (pictured) scored the game's only
goal with less than four minutes to play in the
first half Sunday to lift host Nazareth to a 1-0
victory over Wittenberg University in women's
soccer.
The victory, at Golden Flyer Stadium, was Nazareth's
second in as many days and enabled the Golden
Flyers to open the season with a pair of shutout
wins. Nazareth defeated Allegheny on Saturday,
3-0.
In Sunday's game, Simiele (Solvay HS/Syracuse,
NY) , a senior midfielder, took advantage of a
Wittenberg foul as she was able to redirect into
the goal a free kick from teammate Ashley Clinton
at 41:12 to snap the scoreless tie.
Both team's had chances in the second half with
Nazareth's Rachel Cushman banging a shot off the
crossbar and Wittenberg's Emily Murray heading
a shot toward the Nazareth goal in the closing
minute that was saved by Nazareth goalie Shannon
Burns (Colonie HS/Albany, NY).
Nazareth had a 13-11 edge in shots and Burns
finished with six saves to record her second straight
shutout. Nazareth is home again Thursday for a
non-conference game against Brockport at 4 p.m.
In Sunday's second game, William Smith blanked
Allegheny, 2-0, behind first-half goals by Alex
Rieben and Laura Burnett-Kurie. William Smith
had 10 shots to Allegheny's three and seniro Nikki
Dudley had three saves to record the shutout.
